Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a practice that can be used in combination with other therapeutic approaches. It involves bringing more awareness to what is happening in the present moment, as opposed to the chatterbox in our head that is always planning, thinking about what could go wrong, what went wrong in the past, worrying about things outside our control, etc.

It can help us to be more aware of what we are feeling and what we are thinking, without the intense emotions that usually accompany those thoughts. We can see our thoughts with more clarity and have more certainty about how to deal with them.

Practising mindfulness might involve the practice of meditation. Sitting in a calm space with the sole purpose of paying attention to our breath. It is an exercise of focus that can bring about significant relaxation. It can help us to not get overwhelmed by our internal struggles and pain, and approach life with more peace and a clearer mind.

This greater clarity and peace can help you to think more clearly about what lies at the source of your distress and how you can go about changing things. You can stop operating on autopilot and become more conscious of the actions you take and their likely consequences on your life and emotions.

Due to the connection between thoughts and feelings, being less engaged with our negative thoughts can help us entertain more positive thoughts and feel better.
