Coping Skills
In the face of challenging situations and events, a myriad of difficult emotions might arise. For example, during periods of stress, after a traumatic event or a big change to your life (e.g. a divorce) you can feel on edge, worried and like you will never figure this out. When this happens, we have a choice about how we deal with these emotions. In other words, how we cope.
We can choose to cope by numbing ourselves, escaping or taking excessive risks to create different problems. These choices tend to lead to more challenging emotions. Even if you know that what you are doing won’t fix the problem and make you feel worse in the long run, it might be hard to know what the right thing to do is. How do you cope with these challenging emotions in a healthy way, that won’t create any more problems?
In Therapy, You Can Learn Coping Skills
In therapy, you can talk about the issues that you are trying to cope with and what your available options are. Together, we can find better ways for you to cope and manage the difficult emotions around a stressful situation.
You can get more clarity and confidence about what the right choices are and how you can bring them about.
Therapy is not about passing judgement about the choices or behaviours you have engaged in in the past. In difficult situations, it is normal to do anything that will help you feel less fear, worry and other unpleasant emotions. Therapy is about finding a better way, so you can feel happy and at ease once more. Learn to deal with future problems that might come your way.
